happy birthday mikaela!

January 28, 2009 by zharrod

She’s 14!
She’s beautiful!
She’s smart!
She thinks she is too cool for her dorky big brother and sister, who send her ridiculous birthday video messages!
She’s growing into an amazing woman!
She has a very soft heart!
She yells at the dog, Celeo/Frank/Creature, and it makes me laugh!
She’s even more funny than her older siblings!
She’s way creative!
She’s spunky!
She’s sweet (most of the time;-))!
She makes me feel old, because I remember holding her when she was the size of a football! [tear, tear, sniff, sniff…]
She’s deeply loved by two older siblings, a third of the world away!
She’s my beautiful 14-year-old sister!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MIKAELA! MISS YOU BUNCHES GIRL!

“i like the morals?”

January 28, 2009 by zharrod

You might be wondering, “Where did Zach find that quote he used in the teaser video?” Or you may not, but either way I wanted to share it with you. My friends, whom I’ve met in passing, with Avant, used it in a piece they had created at one point and I just had to find the article (thanks for the help Kelly!). The article is entitled, Liberated Czechs find freedom, lose religion, and it’s over at The Age. The opening quote of the article – Saints peek out from alleys. Angels fleck the skyline. In stone and marble, God’s mysteries reside in this city’s architecture. But try finding him in the skeptical Czech soul. – is what I used and it is very fitting of Prague and the country as a whole.

It’s a very interesting article and I don’t want to take the time to blog about all of it, because you should just go read it now! However, I do want to add a little commentary to one portion. The author, of the piece, quotes a woman who previously worked in radio, as a religious programmer,

“What’s lacking here is the aura of Christian morals,” she said. “People have forgotten that right and wrong stem from Christianity.

“People cheat on their employers. They cheat on each other. The egoism is unbelievable. It’s me, me, me.”

First off, (without getting into a huge discussion) “right and wrong” do not stem, merely, from “Christianity” but from God. Who is the source and essence of truth, who has imparted a moral code to each and every human being, because we are each created in His image (see Romans 1:18-31 and Genesis 1:26-27). I think what she was referencing is that this culture, or European culture as a whole, was formed and rose to prominence on the foundations of Judeo-Christian ethics, and now that much of Europe is forsaking Christianity, there is a void there. I agree with that.

I actually hear things like this quote often. Off the top of my head, I can think of two conversations, immediately, that I’ve had, one with a teammate and another with a teammate’s mother. Both conversations (one of which was completely in Czech!!!), hinged on the loss of morals within the Czech culture. Both individuals told me that, my work is valuable because Christian morals are valuable and this place so needs them. It was interesting hearing this from two different generations! One generation, has teenage children and the other generation is that – a teenager. Both were talking about the biggest problem here is the lack of morals and no foundation. The, attempted, ‘removal of God’ from this place has left a moral vacuum, that many, most of which are atheists, acknowledge as terribly dangerous to the culture at large. I was reminded of this last night, as I received a ride home from a teammate, and the joke within the car was that the word ‘verný’ (faithful) doesn’t exist here, or, in their opinion, in many places. Sadly, there probably is truth to that!

It’s a bridge to spiritual conversation for sure, but it is a challenge to help them see past ‘Christian morals.’ This is what ‘Christianity,’ as a system, gets us. I’m talking about more than just a system! I’m talking about God, breaking into the world through human flesh and living a radical life of love and service, that was ultimately in service to me, as God, Himself, hung a criminal’s death on wooden posts! It’s a revolution of the heart. It’s a complete upheaval of the ‘world’s system’ and our lives, not some system of rules or 1+2=3 formula of sorts. It’s vibrant. It’s alive. It blows systems up! Cultural change cannot happen from systems, or laws passed, but from followers of this Radical, known as Jesus, going into the world and being used as part of the revolution, He has already started, through words and deeds! Not systems!

Wow! I got a little fired up there. I hope this all makes sense and it challenges you a bit. I hope it also helps you know how to pray for this place that YOU AND I, TOGETHER, are attempting to reach! Thanks for stopping by….

the new czech project is kicking it on facebook and else where…

January 28, 2009 by zharrod

That’s right and you need to check it out! I was tempted to say “Czech it Out” but I have been hear too long to do that, I think… 🙂 So here you go, you have 3 options:

  1. Go to the EVENT PAGE
  2. Join the GROUP, BECOME A MEMBER
  3. BECOME A FAN

This is our attempt to try to do the “viral marketing” (I guess, “viral recruiting”) thing with the project. Thus the two newest videos that I cranked out. You can find the full video and the teaser in a number of places too!

  1. VIMEO (which I have a small love affair with, um, not really!) – FULL VERSION or TEASER
  2. YOUTUBE – FULL VERSION or TEASER
  3. At facebook links above

Ok, I do need to be honest vimeo, rocks my stinkn’ face off! So much sleeker than youtube and it just has a better feel to is. {insert “arrogant mac guy” comment against pcs here;-)} One of the cool features of vimeo is you can download the video! Check it out, it’s in the bottom right hand corner under the stats area. I also hope to get the two videos up on my podcast feed via iTunes soon, so you can rock them on your video iPod too (click the little dude below to subscribe!).

So many options I know! I really hope this helps us with recruiting and that God would use it to call God-loving, passionate, sport-loving, culture engaging Christ-followers here this summer on the summer project and beyond! Pass the word, or video, or link, or whatever might come next on to someone you think might be interested! Thanks and as always – Be a revolution!

not creative?

January 28, 2009 by zharrod

In the midst, of all of my talk about “creating” and “creativity,” this morning I stopped by Seth Godin’s blog and enjoyed his thoughts about being creative or not creative in a post, entitled, Creativity and stretching the sweatshirt. Good stuff. But let’s be honest, when Seth blogs, it’s usually good! Here is a portion of the short post, read the rest if you feel so inclined too!

1. If you want to be creative, understand that you’ll need to get to the edges, even if the edges have moved. Being creative means immediately going to the place the last person left off.

2. If you are “not creative,” if you are the sort of person that gets uncomfortable being creative or has been persuaded you’re not capable, don’t worry about it. Just stretch the sweatshirt in your spare time, watch the creative things other people have done, keep up with the state of the art. Then, when you do your “not creative” thing, most people will think it’s pretty creative indeed.

It would seem the question is either, “Do you need to get to the edges?” or “Do you need to stretch that shirt your wearing?” Hmmmm…

inspiration…

January 27, 2009 by zharrod

I have a deadline! Don’t we love deadlines? Maybe we (I) don’t but they are very real! So you can see below that I’ve been doing some creating! It’s been fun, but I wish I had not procrastinated on the front end, so I could enjoy it all a bit more! But seriously I really have enjoyed this. I LOVE CREATING! STAY TUNED FOR THE FULL PROMO VIDEO! I think I will upload it in the morning because it’s exporting now, and it’s at 40% and had two hours left. Anyway, in the midst of trying to keep the HD format and figure what how it works with vimeo, I stumbled (that’s the word I like to use) upon some videos that make me want to create more! Here you go! Enjoy 4 videos, that I loved, I hope you love them too!

a morning cup of kava with eugene

January 20, 2009 by zharrod

That morning cup of coffee is with my new, dear friend, Eugene Peterson, and sadly it doesn’t mean I sit and have coffee with him in person, but through his writing. Last fall, I read The Contemplative Pastor: Returning to the Art of Spiritual Direction, with my pastor, Phil, after good friends, in Athens, Greece, recommended it to me. I really enjoyed the book, but now it would seem that the words of Mr. Peterson are penetrating my heart in a way that they did not, when I read The Contemplative Pastor. My director (Billy) and I are reading are now reading A Long Obedience in the Same Direction: Discipleship in an Instant Society. I know another long title! I love long titles!

The title alone seems so timely for myself and for the world you and we live in. I’m only a mere two chapters into the book and I’ve already have had so much to ponder, pray and meditate on. I wanted to share some quotes that made me go, “hmmmmm, that’s good!” Or, “ouch that stings a bit!” I hope these move you as well! Swing by a bookstore and pick this book up and enjoy a morning cup of kava with Eugene as well!

“Many claim to have been born again, but the evidence for mature Christian discipleship is slim. In our kind of culture anything, even news about God, can be sold if it is packaged freshly; but when it loses its novelty, it goes on the garbage heap. There is a great market for religious experience in our world; there is little enthusiasm for the patient acquisition of virtue, little inclination to sign up for a long apprenticeship in what earlier generations of Christians called holiness.”

“Meanwhile the world whispers, ‘Why bother? There is plenty to enjoy without involving yourself in all that. The past is a graveyard – ignore it; the future is a holocaust – avoid it. There is no payoff for discipleship, there is no destination for pilgrimage. Get God the quick way; buy instant charisma.’”

Ah, there is so much more, but we will leave it there for now. What hit you about those quotes? Any reactions? Here’s to setting forward on the long, rugged path of discipleship, that the world, and even much of the quick-fix, Evangelical church shuns!

late night procrastination…

January 20, 2009 by zharrod

Oh my… So I am somewhat the media department for AIA||Czech Republic and that has meant that I’ve slowly acquired the tools to create quality pieces for us, as well as ways to express myself creatively, and much more. During my trip back to the States, I acquired another couple of pieces to add to those tools and I’m stoked to use them. I’m currently working on conceptualizing, shooting and editing a promo for the Czech Project, but in doing so I’m trying to learn how to use these tools while I’m in the process of creating. I’m thankful for the world we now live in that allows me to find and consume information and etc. so quickly but it could also lead to hours of sitting and “learning” (let’s just call it that, it makes me feel better, but in reality it’s procrastinating a little, I guess!). In that I stumbled upon the videos of a guy, named Ugurcan Kara, on vimeo and I love what he is doing! He is using something called the “Magic Bullet Look,” which I’m trying to figure out how to join in this look, but do it under a budget. Anyway, I wanted to share two of his videos that have served as inspiration and procrastination at the same time for me! I really want to do some projects like these, just beautiful work! Enjoy!

my afternoon prayer walk

January 12, 2009 by zharrod

I [heart] Prague! A LOT! Actually a butt load, to be exact! One of the things I do often here is go on prayer walks, especially when I’m struggling a bit with staying on mission and getting after things here. So today after I loaded up my new opencard, with a year metro pass, I walked from Václavské námestí to Malostranská and prayed, prayed, prayed… While listening to a little bit of this:

So good… Just thought I would share this with you! Be a revolution today!
