comfort food

I love living in Europe and there isn’t much I miss in the states, besides family and friends that is, but there are moments when “comfort food” is great! In the box my parents sent me there was Aunt Jemima pancake mix, Hungry Jack Syrup (in the microwaveable bottle), and much more… So yesterday was a holiday here in Czech so I slept in and then made pancakes and Starbucks’ coffee for my roommate and I. It was great! I’ve been getting some emails asking for my address here in Prague, so if you feel led to send any sort of “comfort food” to me, here you go:

Due to unwanted visitors my address has been removed, feel free to email me to touch base with me. Thank you.

Okay, I really need to study! Be a Revolution this Weekend!

birthday reflections for 2007

May 16, 2007 by zharrod

Recently, as the days past and I neared the big 27-year-old mark (in reality I know it’s not that big!) one of my favorite people in the world, Cindy Smith (my pastor’s wife), asked me, “So what did you think you would be doing at 27? Or what did you think life would like or what didn’t you think life would look like?” I didn’t get to answer Cindy’s question, because we were at a friend’s wedding and there were far too many people there! So here we go, I figured it would be something fun to blog about. So here are some of my 27th Birthday Reflections (see last year’s reflections, click here):

where have i been and some ministry methodology

September 24, 2006 by zharrod

Good Sunday Morning! I sat down at my computer this morning and read an email from a friend who asked me, where I was and why there have been no blog entries in nearly a month. I don’t really have a good excuse and I guess for this reason I should apologize to you my faithful reader.

But life has been very full down here in Xenia, Ohio. I’ve been trying to adjust to the life of campus ministry in the United States for the last month and a half. It has been a bit of an adjustment for me. See the nearly two years I spent on STINT in Czech the ministry methodology was strictly relational and now the methodology is still relational but it also has a ton of programmatic flavor to it. It is the programmatic method of ministry that I grew used to in college, as I was heavily involved with Campus Crusade for Christ at UW-Oshkosh, but my methods of ministry had to severely shift as I moved to middle Europe where 90% of the people say, “I’m Czech, I’m an atheist.” In this environment programs just don’t work. No one would come. It more than often is a waste of our precious time.

As I write this I’m looking out of a Starbucks’ window out to one of my most favorite city squares in all of the United States. It happens to be mere miles from the home that I was born in. I’m sitting in Woodstock, IL. If you have never been here it is a fun place to escape away to and enjoy the small town America feel that is Woodstock. It happens to be the square that the majority of Bill Murray’s Groundhog Day was filmed. Anyway, today has been an interesting day and a very encouraging day as well. Here is the run down, I hope it makes you laugh, cry and moves you to take this world by storm.

wrestling match

September 4, 2005 by zharrod

This week has been tough. I’m not speaking only from my perspective, but for thousands, no check that, millions of people who are hurting this week. I have been watching the news nearly nonstop. My heart has been broken time and time again as I see the images of so many people hurting in the hurricane ripped states of our country.

As I’ve been watching the images, I’ve been convicted, upset and humbled to see how so many of our fellow countrymen are hurting. While I’ve kept up with the happenings that have followed in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina I’ve been wrestling with God.

the state fair & comfort

August 9, 2005 by zharrod

Happy Monday! So my adjustment back to American culture continues. Very characteristic of myself I PUSHED THE ENVELOPE and ventured into the interesting environment of the State Fair with some friends from college. It was great to catch up with Mel, Melissa, Tanya, and Kristin after not seeing them for over 17 months. But I have to be honest that it was a very interesting day for me.

As we walked in, I saw rows and rows of food stands. I had to venture in. It was if they were calling, “Zach we’ve missed you. We are here for you come and delight in the grease and fattiness of all we are. We will comfort you!” I just had to respond and delight in some of this quintessential American food – corn dogs, funnel cakes, jumbo pretzels, and so many more artery clogging foods! My first foray of eating was a corn dog; I nearly had a spiritual experience with my first bite. The plumb juicy hot dog surrounded by deep fried goodness. Mmmmm, my mouth is watering even as I type the words. During my 17 months over seas I didn’t once think about corn dogs, but I certainly missed them!
