teaching football…

May 31, 2008 by zharrod

This week I had a fun opportunity, which I even got to share with one of my young teammates! Our young, stud outside linebaker, who we all call Å imi, and I had the chance to teach 19 kids at Christian International School of Prague a little football. That is a little American football. The unique thing about the group is that very few of the kids were Americans, so must of them had no idea about football, which was fun. I wish I would have asked where the kids were from too, but needless to say it was a very diverse group of children.

We started with learning how to throw and catch, then a couple of quick cone drills, and then a little pick up game. Needless to say, the game was a bit of controlled chaos! My favorite part was when I threw the ball to one of the kids, he caught it and then before he got tagged he threw the ball down field about 10 yards. The concept of a forward pass once was a little tough; in fact, this happened about 4 times in total in a 25 minute game. All in all, it was a great hour and some change and I am excited that Å imi was able to help me out! I would love for us, as a team, to do more of this more often to increase the popularity and maybe even have kids get interested in playing down the road. It is a bonus for me, because I get to do two things, 1) help the game here and 2) be a light to people through the game. Cool stuff.

post-christian europe, birth rates, and radical islam…

May 26, 2008 by zharrod

This weekend I was bouncing around on the web, and read some blogs that I don’t hit as regularly and I stumbled upon, Why (Many) Europeans Refuse to Reproduce over at Justin Taylor’s blog. Taylor links to Uncommon Knowledge, with Peter Robinson, (of National Review Online) and a series of clips from a larger interview entitled, The Decline and Fall of Europe, with Bruce S. Thornton (a professor in the classical studies program at California State University Fresno). I found each of the five very intriguing. Here are the links for you to view them:

The Decline and Fall of Europe: Chapter 1 of 5

The Decline and Fall of Europe: Chapter 2 of 5
The Decline and Fall of Europe: Chapter 3 of 5
The Decline and Fall of Europe: Chapter 4 of 5
The Decline and Fall of Europe: Chapter 5 of 5

Here is one of the five I found on youtube:

Check out all five and please pray for Europe and the state of this continent!

football update…

So I was talking to my old friend/roommate, Ryan, last night and I realized that I haven’t written much about results as of late. I’m sorry. I know there are so many hardcore Lions fans out there dependent on these posts! I guess I haven’t posted because I’ve had a salty taste in my mouth to experiencing my first loss to the Panthers (or cross town rivals). We have handled the rest of the Czech league (Plzen and Brno) which appears to be the weaker than normal. We have another contest with Brno, the Panthers, then a semi-final and then the final. The picture you see above speaks a thousand words about this season. So close, yet so far. That’s me (#2) cutting the lead blocker and just missing the play. Oh well… Here’s some reading for you. (Don’t forget you can see scores and pics at the Lions site)

season of injuries…

May 21, 2008 by zharrod

They are just piling up! This weekend I acquired yet another one to add to the list. Here is the list as of now:

  1. Bum ankle, from ultimate frisbee last summer at training, acting up
  2. Pulled hamstring, two days before the season started.
  3. Slightly hyper-extended right knee, that resulted in me not walking for two days.
  4. Deep thigh contusion on my right quad.
  5. Re-dislocated pinky finger on right hand. I did this in warm-ups!
  6. Said contusion feels as if it has developed into a quad strain.
  7. Re-Hyper-extended left elbow

That’s with 4 games left! I know I’m getting older, but this is ridiculous! Time to do some rehab…

note: Bottle of Advil over my left shoulder for swelling! Love it!

athletes and their position…

May 19, 2008 by zharrod

“Why do you focus time and effort on about 1% of the population?” That question has been asked before. I don’t blame people for asking it, but the same could be said for reaching artists, politicians, business leaders, and many other “niche” groups of society. In fact, my long-term heart is to reach some of those other groups I mentioned, here in Prague, but right now it is zeroed in primarily on athletes. The reason is because…

“In a society looking to athletes as heroes, we must find heroes looking up to God.”

Our former president with AIA said this and I believe it to be true. It is growing even more and more true as much of the world is sport-crazed and only getting more crazed! If you reach the athletes, they can reach the whole. I was reminded of this as I watched this from ESPN, this morning.

I’m pretty stoked that I could embed this video. Some good stuff to chew on! I’m off to run some errands…

Technology is a funny thing. Here I sit nearly half a world away from so many of those dear to me and I feel as if there isn’t a big stinkn’ ocean separating us. Friday and this weekend revealed this to me. I came home after a long day of trying to learn reflexive passive and slovosled (word order) in the Czech language on my birthday and I was blown away. Here is just a small glipse of why…

facebook_love.png

I got home to nearly 30 messages in my inbox, and then more after. The messages were some facebook love and also some great voice mail messages from family and friends! I thought about doing a little voice mail remix but I didn’t want to embaress some of you! 😉 So here I sit the Monday after all of this, feeling very loved. Thank you to each of you. I am indeed blessed.

…oh to be loved…

good thing I’m studying…

I read an article yesterday entitled, Czech language exams for residency permit seekers, and I took comfort because I’m busting my rear to learn this language. Here is a quote:

Prague – From now on, if you would like to reside permanently in the Czech Republic, you will have to know the Czech language. That’s the message the Czech government is sending to foreigners seeking to get residency permits in this country.

Bring it Czech government! Bring it!

28 reflections

May 16, 2008 by zharrod

This week has been filled with things I hadn’t expected and I’ve had a lot more late nights than my body is used to. So when the alarm clock went off, I thought, “It’s my Birthday I can sleep and I don’t have to go to school.” Well, I’m going in a little late so I can enjoy my full cup of coffee without rush, but I have to get to class today. So as I stumbled out of my bedroom, my roommate, Ernie, came out with his classic Ernie smile and said, “Hold on I got something for you.” I then waited 10 minutes, and began to worry. But no worries… He brought out a big cookie with 28 candles and was playing a ragae Happy Birthday Song he found on iTunes last night. Too funny and a special way to start my day (thank you Ernie). Here is the cookie…

bdaycookie.JPG

I thought it would be fun to ponder 28 reflections for each of my 28 years. Some are thoughtful and some are complete nonsense! I hope you enjoy!

  1. By God’s grace, I seem to grow more appreciative (most days) of each moment with every year that passes.
  2. Even though I realize I’m young my body doesn’t feel like I’m AS young (I know it will only get worse).
  3. The days only continue to move faster and faster.
  4. I’m still excited to get older and the wisdom that comes with age.
  5. I think it is safe to say I’ve finally gone through puberty (see earlier pictures with me and my beard).
  6. There are an infinite amount of life experiences that are ahead of me, that I can’t wait for and also some that bring a healthy fear of God to my life.
  7. I find the life that God has lead me into terribly interesting.
  8. I don’t own a car, a house or many of the other things that friends that are my age own. Interesting…
  9. I never thought I would be here, doing what I do; i.e. I will walk out the door within 20 minutes and go to class to learn a language. Is this really my job?
  10. At any moment God is ready to bring somethings, or someone to my life I feel more grounded and ready than I’ve ever felt.
  11. I love the adventure of a life that I live.
  12. I’ve found God bringing a beautiful continence (or steadiness) to my life, that has allowed me to trust Him in ways that are not inherent to my personality and demeanor.
  13. I like being a twenty-something.
  14. I don’t know yet about the thirty-something thing, but bring it on in a short two years.
  15. This has been one of the most challenging years of the 28 years I’ve been alive thus far, which brings some sober thoughts because I know there will be more challenges ahead.
  16. It is strange being 10 years older than a good portion of the guys I play American football with here in Prague.
  17. My littlest sister is 13! A teenager, I think this is one of the scariest things about getting older is seeing her go from a baby to toddler to little girl to teenager to…. I’m starting to hyperventilate, I’m stopping there!
  18. I long to see God overhaul my heart each day and let my heartbeat match His.
  19. People are ever changing and yet at the same point some people don’t change at all. This is extremely paradoxical for me.
  20. My longing for the Czech nation to experience a Jesus revolution has never been stronger.
  21. I’ve finally stepped up to the plate of adulthood and I’m taking things seriously that I’ve scoffed at or deliberately ignored in the past.
  22. Even though, I feel good about stepping up to the plate of adulthood, I find myself missing the simplicities of youth. I long to enter into the fantasy world of James M. Barrie (the author of Peter Pan) some days.
  23. I’m learning more and more about dependency upon God and a healthy dependency on the people he has put around me.
  24. I have learned that with being dependent upon the Sovereign Creator that He must move, He most do the work and I can’t force his hand. It’s Him. Him.
  25. I find that I have to wake up to go to the bathroom more at night and I struggle to sleep in. Is this a sign of getting older?
  26. I dearly love my family more with each passing day and find God bringing a deeper appreciation of them. (I LOVE YOU Mom, Dad, Mikaela and Megan!)
  27. I can’t believe I actually came up with 28 reflections and also that I have 28 years to ponder!

What will God bring in this 28th year of life? I’m excited to anticipate God’s movements over the next year. What will I be thankful for on this day next year? Thanks for stopping by today and thanks for being a reader!

mistake with last prayer letter…

May 13, 2008 by zharrod

Hello all out there in zACHhARROD.com reader land! I have a problem to alert you of. In my most recent Anastatoo Letter (my monthly prayer letter, that can be found digitally on the updates page, but you will need a password, contact me for it.) I included an ask for helping take Honza go to “The Games” with me for a project we are having there. I’m trusting God to bring in about $3000 for him. With that being said, I had my prayer letter company include a return envelope with the letter for people to put their financial gifts to help Honza inside and then send those back to me. Well, here is the problem, the put my old Ohio address and not the Wisconsin address that it needed to be. I apologize. Please use the Genoa City, WI address that is on the letter. Thank you. I’m off to hit my frontal lobe with a hammer, also called Czech class.
